HOMA

Homeostasis model assessment (HOMA) is a diagnostical procedure that is based on the homeostasis model of carbohydrate metabolism.

Physiological foundation

The HOMA approach is grounded in the homeostasis model of Turner et al., a mathematical model of feedback coupled interaction of insulin and glucose in carbohydrate homeostasis.

Calculation

In HOMA, simultaneously determined glucose and insulin levels in fasting state are entered in equations that calculate beta cell function and insulin sensitivity.

  • HOMA Beta = 20 * fasting insulin (mU/l) / (fasting glucose (mmol/l) - 3,5)
  • HOMA IR = fasting insulin (mU/l) * fasting glucose (mmol/l) / 22,5
